Thornbury Guiding Units Advancement Ceremony

Submitted by Shirley Woolner

On June 7 the Thornbury Guiding units and their girl’s families gathered at the Community Center.  The theme this year was Canada’s 150th Birthday.  All the girls advancing  to the next level  received “birthday hats” signed by the girls in the unit they were leaving.  Starting with 15 Sparks, the girls walked a balloon path to the stage to receive their final badge,  Advancement certificate and Friendship pin.  5 Brownies advanced to Guides, receiving a flower, certificate and pin. Emily Jack received a gift for selling 12 cases of cookies.  Finally, 2 Guides, Summer Mcdonald and Sophie Reid were presented with their Completion Pin, Certificate and a “goodie” bag of items, each with a purpose as they move to Pathfinders.

Additionally, 2 Guides, Summer Mcdonald  and Cheyenne Dickie , were recognized for selling 18 and 26 cases of cookies, respectively!  Also, Sophie Reid was presented with the Lady Baden Powell Award.  This is the highest award in the Guide Program and takes two or more years to complete.  It is designed to be an extra challenge, providing an opportunity to learn more about Girl Guides while gaining a deeper understanding of what Guiding stands for.  The award is worn on the Pathfinder uniform with pride!

The current Guiders were introduced and   presented with a rose in appreciation of their work and, after our unit closings, everyone was invited to share a Canada Day birthday cake.

This was the final meeting for this year, but registration is already open for the coming year, which will begin Sept 20th.  All those registered by the end of August will be eligible to attend the Canada wide Guiding “Birthday Bash” coming up Sept.

The units are in need of volunteers to assist as Guiders.  No experience is necessary; just a desire to volunteer.  To register a girl or Guider, go online to
