Signs, signs, everywhere a sign.
Hand-crafted wooden Canada signs being prepared by a group of people working with the Events For Life Centre Inc. are flying off the shelves.
Events for Life Centre Inc., is a federally registered charity operating fee-based day programming for individuals with special needs who live in the communities of Thornbury, Meaford, Owen Sound, Collingwood and outlying area,” said Shelley Higginson, who founded and operates the program. “Each day is carefully planned to provide social, recreational and educational programming in a supported environment allowing each individual to reach their potential.
“One of the things that we do at EFL is make seasonal wooden crafts, and nothing has sold as well as our Canadian flags. I can honestly say our flags have gone viral !!!”
“We posted an advertisement on our Facebook page , telling everyone that if they hadn’t yet got a Canadian flag to celebrate Canada’s 150 birthday, consider buying a pallet flag from EFL.
On Wednesday we had seven town employees purchase 10 flags, the Facebook page had 12 orders and a parent came and bought 10 along with our Coffee Nook. By the time I looked at my email Wednesday evening we had another 45 orders. We will see how far the wood and time allows and then might have to start saying no to any more orders.”
As part of the program our participants have a small business called Coffee Nook, which runs every Wednesday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 at the United Church in Thornbury. The participants make muffins and serve their guests as well as offering their crafts for sale.
“They are being so well received we are having difficulty in keeping up with orders,” volunteer Marilyn Douglas said. “They are going like hotcakes. It’s about Canada, it’s about the community, It’s a great learning experience for them, and gives them a sense of accomplishment.”
